018 - Tower Lab Report Guide
Lab Group Members: Most labs in this class will be done in groups. Several labs, like this one, will be done individually.
The Lab Problem: Given only this piece of paper, make the tallest possible free-standing tower.
Our Hypothesis: Your hypothesis is a possible solution to the problem. Think about it, what are you going to do?
Research References: With most of your labs, you will be given time to research the problem. This will give you some background about the problem and the information gained will help you decide how to solve the problem.
Procedures
  1. You have this piece of paper, nothing else.
  2. Your tower will be measured from the table to the highest point on the tower.
  3. For your tower to be measured by your teacher, the tower must stand freely for at least 5 seconds.
  4. When thinking about solving a problem, you need to learn to see yourself working on the problem. When you have an idea about a solution to the lab problem, visualize yourself doing the lab in this classroom. Review this page about Planning An Experiment.
  5. As you visualize what you will do, do you see any problems that might arise? If you see a problem, what would you have to do to keep the problem from happening?
  6. This will help you in planning what to do, avoiding at least some of the potential problems.
  7. What will you do with this paper to make a tower?
  8. When you have an idea, ask yourself how high the tower will be?
  9. Think about this solution, is there another solution that will make a taller tower?

Conclusion: A conclusion is the answer to the question, or solution to the problem. For this lab, your tower will serve as your conclusion.
